How to Insert an Invisible Zipper

An invisible zipper is a perfect choice when you want to conceal the zipper in your project. With a few tips and tricks, you can easily swap any regular zipper for an invisible one.

What You'll Need:

Preparing the Fabric and Zipper:

  1. Finish the Fabric Edges: Serge or zigzag the raw edges of your fabric to prevent fraying.
  2. Mark the Fabric: On the right side of the fabric, mark ¾” from the top edge on both pieces. Also, mark where the zipper should stop.
  3. Mark the Zipper: On the wrong side of the zipper, mark ¾” from the top edge on each side. Mark where the zipper should stop as well. Note that the zipper will be longer than the opening.

Sewing the Invisible Zipper:

  1. Position the Zipper: Lay both fabric pieces and the zipper right side up. Unzip the zipper.
  2. Flip the Zipper: Turn the zipper so the right sides are together with the fabric. Align the marks and pin or clip it in place.
  3. Attach the Invisible Zipper Foot: Install the invisible zipper foot on your sewing machine. Stitch down the first side of the zipper.
  4. Position the Fabric: Zip the zipper halfway. Lay all pieces with the right side up.
  5. Attach the Second Side: Position the unstitched side of the zipper with the right sides together. Flip it over, pin or clip it in place, and start stitching from the bottom mark to the top.

Finishing the Seam:

  1. Attach the Regular Zipper Foot: Move the needle to the left if possible, so it's next to the foot. Use a narrow zipper foot if you can’t adjust the needle position.
  2. Position the Fabric: Lay the fabric so that the bulk of the project is to the right of the needle.
  3. Finish the Zipper Seam: Move the zipper out of the way and lower the needle into the end of the stitch securing the zipper. Stitch down 1-2 inches.
  4. Switch to All-Purpose Foot: Remove the zipper foot and attach the all-purpose foot. Finish stitching the seam as usual.
  5. Trim the Excess Zipper: Cut off the excess zipper, leaving a couple of inches unstitched.
  6. Secure the Zipper End: Close the end of the zipper with fabric, ribbon, or a serge stitch.
  7. Secure the Zipper Tape: Re-attach the zipper foot and carefully secure the zipper tape to the seam allowance, keeping the rest of the project away from the needle.
