Cutting Instructions:
- Red Fabric:
- 4 Strips: 22 ½” x 2 ¾”
- 3 Strips: 40 ½” x 2 ¾”
- White Fabric:
- 3 Strips: 22 ½” x 2 ¾”
- 3 Strips: 40 ½” x 2 ¾”
- 2 Strips: 40 ½” x 1 ½” (Upper & Lower Borders)
- 2 Strips: 32 ½” x 1 ½” (Side Borders)
- Blue Fabric:
- Square for Stars: 18 ½” x 16 ¼”
- Backing: 43” x 32”
- Cut remaining blue fabric into 2 ¼” x WOF (width of fabric) strips for binding.
Directions:
(Seam Allowance is ¼”)
- Cut a piece of cut-away stabilizer large enough to fit the 360 x 350mm (Designer™ Majestic Hoop). Pin or spray baste the blue 18 ½” x 16 ¼” piece of fabric onto the stabilizer. Note: The 18 ½” side of the fabric is the top of the flag. Be sure that the embroidery is positioned so that the top of the stars are horizontal with the top of the fabric. If using a 360 x 200mm (Designer™ Royal Hoop), you will need to do the embroidery in two hoopings. Stitch out the star embroidery.
- Sew the 22 ½” strips together starting with a red strip, alternating colors. (Set One - 7 total strips)
- Sew the 40 ½” strips together starting with a white strip, alternating colors. (Set Two - 6 total strips)
- Sew set one to the star embroidery, right sides together.
- Sew set two to the bottom of the star embroidery & bottom of set one, right sides together.
- Sew the white border strips (40 ½” x 1 ½”) to the top and bottom of the quilt.
- Sew the white border strips (32 ½” x 1 ½”) to the sides of the quilt.
- Apply a light weight fusible interfacing on the back of the whole flag.
- Using INSPIRA® Cut-A-Way, either hoop the fabric with stabilizer or hoop only the stabilizer & pin or spray baste the quilt to the top of the stabilizer. Once your hooping is set, use Design Positioning & the fix option to embroider each line of the pledge into the center of the red strips using white thread & the blue thread on the white strips.
- When the embroidery is finished, layer the backing, batting & quilt top together. Stitch in the ditch using invisible thread or a coordinating thread to quilt the stripes of the flag & stitch along the diagonal between the rows of stars.
- Use the remaining blue 2 ¼” strips to bind the quilt.
Alternative Directions:
- Cut the strips & embroider separately each line then construct the quilt. Remember the middle is the middle when it comes to placing the font’s onto the strips.
- All of these fonts were created within the mySewnet software. It can be completely customizable with the font’s available within the ‘Letter’ tab or by using QuickFont’s to create your own. Keep in mind any font needs to be able to fit onto a 1 ¾” strip, so font sizes need to be shorter than that to fit.
